SEND

At Epsom Primary and Nursery School we are committed to supporting all children, including those special educational needs of pupils, to ensure that they make good progress and reach their full potential.

We value the diversity of our community as a rich resource that can contribute to the learning of all pupils and staff. We aim to provide equality of educational opportunity for all by removing barriers to success for all pupils irrespective of age, ability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, language and social background. To remove these barriers we first and foremost ensure that all teaching and support staff have a good understanding of inclusive teaching practices within the classroom.

Identification and Provision

High-quality teaching that is adapted and personalised will meet the individual needs of the majority of children. Some children need educational provision that is additional to or different from this. This is special educational provision under Section 21 of the Children and Families Act 2014.

All our teachers see themselves as teachers of SEN and consistently follow the 'assess, plan, do, review' approach to making sure they are providing exactly the right provision for each child, supported by the school's SENCo and outside agencies where appropriate.

Where children are in need of additional support beyond that provided in the classroom, there are a range of strategies that can extend or support pupils such as pre-teaching, pastoral support and SALT (Speech and Language Therapy). These are carefully monitored to ensure they are effective in helping children to progress in their learning.

Parents are central to the process of enabling pupils fulfil their potential. Parents are actively encouraged to meet with their child’s class teacher or SENCo to share any concerns they may have, and to engage with the school in order to help their child overcome the barriers to their learning.

As a school we strive to provide the provision that should be ordinarily available in all mainstream schools for all pupils, including those with additional needs. You can find more information about this at:

Local authorities are required to publish a ‘local offer’ which is intended to provide information about the provision available to children with special educational needs and/or disabilities in the local area.
