Curriculum Intent

Our core values underpin all aspects of the curriculum at Epsom Primary and Nursery school.

Our school life and as extension, our curriculum promotes being Respectful, Ambitious, Inclusive and Nurturing. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that our core values are embedded throughout. Our children are given the opportunity to explore ideas through enquiry based learning where vocabulary is taught with a high priority with deliberate connections between subjects used to promote the development of longer term memory. The curriculum is based on the needs of our children and aims to ensure that they can choose and navigate their future pathway. Our curriculum promotes the inclusive and diverse nature of our school and our community to ensure that children reach full potential from a range of starting points.

We believe that developing vocabulary is key to unlocking the whole curriculum. We have developed Knowledge, Skills and Vocabulary documents for all wider curriculum subjects to ensure that our curriculum is carefully planned, sequenced to build on prior learning while giving the children interconnected moments to gain a deeper understanding of their learning. We underpin this with first hand engaging opportunities such as trips, exploring the local area through field work and a range of workshops.

Developing emotional resilience is very important at Epsom Primary and Nursery school. The children understand when to be ready to learn, why they need to be ready to learn and continue to develop strategies to be able to be ready to learn through the Zones of Regulation. Our broad and balanced curriculum supports the children in developing this resilience, understanding and valuing themselves and others. They gain a wider understanding of the world we live in while being tolerant and respectful towards those who may be different from themselves.

We are ambitious for all our pupils and aim to develop a love of learning with an understanding that it is a lifelong process. Reading is a key aspect of this and is given high focus throughout the curriculum. The ability to decode and comprehend underpins the desire we have for our children to develop a love of Reading that lasts them a lifetime.
