Maths
At Epsom Primary & Nursery School, we are passionate about enabling the children to become confident & fluent mathematicians who are able to apply their knowledge and skills to solve mathematical problems and use their reasoning skills to explain their mathematical thinking.
We follow a mastery approach to teaching maths and we believe every child is capable of reaching the same understanding of mathematical concepts with a small step guided approach. This allows fluid progression as pupils move through the school embedding concrete, pictorial and abstract representations for each mathematical concept.
We aim to develop pupils' understanding of how maths contributes to real life situations by discovering patterns and connections with first hand experiences of Mathematics in nature, careers and the world around us. We encourage mathematical talk and collaborative learning through providing opportunities for children to explain and justify their thinking using mathematical language.
We encourage our pupils to be ambitious and approach maths with an inquiring and inquisitive mind. Our goal is to nurture a love for mathematics through an enjoyable and inclusive learning environment where every child makes progress so that all children are ready for the next stage of their education.
